Connecting Leiden University and Edinburgh Medical School
Three of my ancestors studied at Leiden University - John Monro (1716-1791), Alexander Monro Primus (1697-1767) and Alexander Monro Secundus (1733-1817). All studied medicine and went on to have interesting careers. John became the physician at Bedlam mental hospital in London, Alexander Primus founded the Edinburgh Medical School and Alexander Secundus was a professor at Edinburgh and wrote books on anatomy - part of the brain is named after him (the interventricular foramen of Monro).
I was pleased to visit Leiden and see their names in the University School of Medicine archive. You can find out more about the doctors Monro at Surgeons Hall Museum in Edinburgh.
