Leiden, the city where Rembrandt was born. Where the 17th century is still more or less intact... except for the house where Rembrandt first opened his eyes in 1606. The year of Rembrandt celebrations (Rembrandt died 350 years ago) is the occasion to rebuild the house where he was born and the surrounding area. Not as a fantasy, but based on scientific research. Building historians working for Heritage Leiden have cooperated intensively with a historical reconstruction artist.
Rembrandt lived in the Weddesteeg with his parents, brothers and sisters. The windmill where his step-grandfather and father milled malt stood opposite the house. Over the centuries the house where Rembrandt was born disappeared.
